HYDERABAD: Minister wants early review of riots cases

HYDERABAD, Jan 31: Caretaker Sindh Home Minister brigadier (retd) Akhtar Zamin has directed the police of Hyderabad region to review in a week all the cases lodged against unidentified people for their involvement in riots that followed the assassination of Benazir Bhutto to enable the police force to concentrate on security measures for the forthcoming elections.
He issued these directive at a meeting held at the Circuit House to finalise the security arrangements for the forthcoming general elections.
Addressing the meeting, the minister directed the officers not to spare actual culprits.
He said that after review of unnecessary cases, the burden on police officers would be reduced and they would be in a position to fully concentrate on the security election arrangements.
He directed the police officers to be proactive and warned that any negligence on their part would not be tolerated at any cost.
He said that security for forthcoming elections and counterstrategy should be prepared. He directed that the constituencies be divided into sectors of ten polling stations each with availability of effective communication system and proper security forces in such a way that no untoward incident could happen there.
He asked all the DPOs to submit detailed report about forces and vehicles available with them and identify shortfall.
The caretaker Sindh Minister also directed the DCOs to remain in touch with the political leaders of their areas and convince them to follow code of conduct.
He also directed them not to allow any political party to hold public meeting at other than declared/notified spots or display of arms.
He said that all possible security was being provided to the political leaders including PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari with 300 police personnel, 150 each at Karachi and Nadero, District Larkana.
Similarly other political leaders of different parties have also been provided security for their protection without any discrimination, he added.
Earlier, the Hyderabad RPO briefed the minister about the security measures adopted by the administration in the region.
